A running rant about bad television, crappy products, horrible service, mindless politics, corporate and government ineptitude, moronic media, marketing overload, public idiocy, stupid entertainment, etc. Here's what's annoying me today:

TV Lawyers

These personal injury lawyers that advertise on TV are the biggest slimeballs going. The best known locally is James Sokolove. You see his ads mainly during the noon news, or during daytime TV. Targeting all the soap opera watchers. If I ever needed a lawyer he'd be the last guy I'd call. Looks like a dick.

They are ambulance chasers. Whatever the hot buzz is in the media about bad medicine or dangerous products, they are on the case. Asbestos poisoning, Vioxx, securities fraud. Anything you want to sue somebody for, they're there to help, collect their 33%, and add to the country's litigation madness.

Here's a website urging lawyers to advertise on TV because "TV advertising reaches people with serious injuries IN BED at home or in the hospital where they don't have access to the Internet or Yellow Pages." Gee how "equal-access" of you. Just dial 1-800-HURT-911. Very clever.

And here's an even better one. This may be related to the above. A blog about lawyer advertising. This post warns about the costs of redoing your billboard or other advertising campaigns if one of your partners is suspended or disbarred and you have to change your firm's name. It suggests that if you think you may have been caught doing anything wrong, you might want to hold off on advertising for a while. The post ends with "The moral of this story is that when advertising, always be on your best behavior and make sure that everyone in the firm is." Then I guess if you weren't advertising, you could behave as badly as you wanted?

I don't have much use for lawyers period, but these guys are the scum of the earth.

I find this post extremely libelous to lawyers. I am suing you for mental anguish, becase I know a guy who has a friend who is a lawyer. Because of that, this post hurt my feelings.

Expect a subpoena very soon! I just have to find Mr. Sokolov's number...

I don't know why you think that lawyers shouldn't advertise. I guess you think they should work for free too. Is it ok for everyone else to advertise. What about doctors? Do you think you should be allowed to advertise your blog?

Before lawyers were allowed to advertise, low income people didn't have access to affordable legal representation. That's why the Supreme Court allowed lawyers to advertise, so that low income people could find out where to find affordable legal services.

Because of the volume of cases that advertising brings to lawyers, those lawyers must specialize. This results in better representation. It's interesting to note that the people who scream the loudest about lawyers, such as John Stossel, still hire them when they are injured. I hope you are never seriously injured because of someone else's negligence, but if someone runs a red light and you are left with a devastating lifelong injury, I'm sure you'll be the first to call a lawyer. If you want to avoid having to call a lawyer, make sure you buy sufficient disability insurance.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to advertise. I'm just saying that the impression I get from the lawyers that advertise on TV isn't positive. They come across looking like sleazebags. If that's how you want to look, then fine. And yes, I'd probably include doctors in there too.

It's probably more that I see advertising on TV as rather below what should be a dignified profession. Actually I thing advertising any kind of personal service on TV is kind of tacky.

I may do a whole post on drug advertising too.

Hey it's cool if a good lawyer wants to bring legal services to people that can't afford them. Too bad the lawyers that do advertise to this market seem to be doing it in a way that appears to look like they are trying to get people involved in frivolous claims and unrealistic expectations. By the way, don't we all have access to public defenders? I think most of the lawyers the really want to help the poor contact the community centers in those areas and let it be known.

You should definately do something on the drug companies. Talk about a bunch scumbags! IF they had their way (it's pretty close to it now) all of us would be on some kind of pill regimen.

In answer to the above question "By the way, don't we all have access to public defenders?", the answer is no.

First, public defenders are lawyers paid by the state to defend only people who have been arrested for a crime which could result in incarceration in jail or prison. Public defenders do not represent someone who has been hurt in an accident due to the negligence of a person or corporation.

Second, not everyone who has been arrested is entitled to a public defender. A criminal defendant, who requests a public defender, is first examined to determine whether the defendant can afford to pay for a lawyer. Income and assets of the defendant will be looked at. Only if the defendant really cannot afford a lawyer and is facing jail time, will the state pay for a public defender. Taxpayers don't want their taxes to be used to pay for a lawyer to represent someone arrested for DUI or some other crime unless there is no way the defendant can pay a lawyer.

I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I would very happily welcome it and so would my clients.
