Land of the Caretaker Governors
Raise your hands if you really believe Mitt Romney isn't running for President. He just came in second in the first 2008 straw poll, and has been on a national tour trashing Massachusetts for the past year. Come on. Mitt only came back from Utah to run for Governor, because he saw an easy victory, and a great platform to run for President.
Jane Swift was a joke. She was only governor because Paul Cellucci got bored of the job halfway through his first full term, and rode off to become Ambassador to Canada. Cellucci only became Governor because Bill Weld got bored of the job before him. And they kept winning elections just because the Democrats kept serving up horrible candidates (as they are well on their way to doing again) and making the case for divided government every day by their actions in the State House. Hey, I even voted for all of these guys.
If you are in favor of term limits, then the Massachusetts governor's office is your kind of place. Want your candidate to take a pledge to serve only two terms? How bout a pledge just to finish one term?
It's been this way ever since Bill Weld rode into the Governor's office in the Silber Shocker filled election of 1990. At least Weld, Cellucci, and even Swift made some attempt to act interested in the job for a while. Despite his transparent denials, Mitt has been running for President since the day he announced he was running for Governor.
Maybe this time we can elect someone who really wants to be Governor of Massachusetts.

I think 'mannequin' Romney is in for a big let down once the race really gets rolling. At this point in 1992, Clinton wasn't even on the radar but eventually swept everybody away. It seems rather odd doesn't it? A state that is so dominated by democrats that the governor's seat has been republican for so long? I think the Dems wanted it even less than the republicans but since the seat was there for the taking, the republicans glumly took it over. Maybe Trustee will be our next Governor?!

Nobody from Massachusetts will EVER be elected president.

Word on the street is that he's done great things for Massachusetts. Is it true?

I can't think of any.

My sister-in-law used to have a brother with severe handicaps. He died a couple years ago but the place he was living is called the Fernald Center. It is a Godsend for any families that have a severely handicapped or retarded child because it is funded by the state. However, Romney took the funding for it out of the state budget and a fight over keeping the center open has gone on since. I really can't think of anything else he's done though. He does talk about the usual stuff like lowering taxes, shrinking government, capital punishment, etc. However, he is only the governor. The legislature is what rules things here and it is all controlled by the democrats.

Yes, I'd agree. The Democratic Legistlature in Massachustts is much worse than any of these Republican Governors. My rant wasn't really about any of these Republican's policies, just their attention spans. Although I am tired of Romney, personally. He's no Bill Weld.

Originally, public service was not supposed to be a career. In reality, I think that concept must lasted about ten seconds.
