A running rant about bad television, crappy products, horrible service, mindless politics, corporate and government ineptitude, moronic media, marketing overload, public idiocy, stupid entertainment, etc. Here's what's annoying me today:

Tom Ellis

What's up with Tom Ellis on NECN. The guy is terrible. It's just uncomfortable to watch him. And NECN is really a pretty good station. Much more professional than any of the over-air local stations. For the most part, all of their anchors are good. They've developed some good young talent too, some who have even gone on to the networks. But for at least ten years, they have had this fossil on every weekend. Shouldn't say fossil, because it's really not about age. Jack Williams actually looks good back at 4, in comparison to Ellis, and Chet Curtis, who's also been retired to NECN.

Tom can barely get through a story without messing it up, he smiles at bizzarre times, he's just terrible. I'd love to know what Chris Collins and Matt Noyce are thinking when they are doing the handoff to Tom. Must be like talking to your weird uncle. They always have this sarcastic look in their eye like they can't believe they have to make small talk with this guy.

And he was actually the number one anchor in Boston, like, 20 years ago? Amazing. He must be signed to a 20 year contract or own part of the company or something. Why else would they have kept him there this long. Certainly they could find someone right of school who would be a lot cheaper than Ellis, and certainly better. What gives?

Liz never bothered me at all. I thought Jack Williams was a lightweight at the time, but like I said, with the dumming down of standards in local news, he seems almost like the smartest guy on TV now. Chet's OK doing the news, but when he tries to do interviews like he has been on NECN, he comes off as a pretty clueless, I think.

Can somebody tell me why there are so many people looking for Tom Ellis on Google? I get almost as many hits from people looking for Tom Ellis from NECN as I do for "Bush sucks" or "Quark sucks" my two most popular entries. What's up with that?

I think that Tom Ellis's major problem is that he is an actor trying to play a newscaster. He even has a cameo role in the film Marathon Man from 1976. His whole schtick is over-the-top.

I'm only here because I was trying to find out how old he is. Does anyone know? I'm getting old myself, so I'm developing some empathy for situations like Tom Ellis coming out of retirement to anchor weekends on NECN. Come on, have some compassion!!! What gets me is his hair. And I'd have to agree with an earlier comment that his on-air reaction is sometimes inappropriate. He seems almost cheerful when delivering particularly unpleasant news. God love him (as my grandmother would have said.) You'd think he'd just like to stay home and enjoy his beautiful home.

It's not like he just came out of retirement. He's been doing this shift since NECN went on the air over 10 years ago. He's just painful to watch, and generally NECN is the only local news channel that is at all watchable. Nothing to do with his age. He's just bad.

I don't know why anyone else was searching for Tom Ellis NECN, but the reason I was doing it was to find a bio that would tell me how old this gasbag is. He is just awful. I'm just visiting the area; 20 years ago, when I lived in Boston, he was horrible, speaking as though he were reading to a pack of retards. Now he's even worse.

I grew up in Boston and remember when he was the #1 anchor. His nickname at the time was Tom "Smile Your Mother's Dead" Ellis because of the inappropriate way he'd smile when announcing some major death/catastrophe.

Did you ever notice the way he slurs words? Maybe he drinks. I do find him entertaining to watch. At times he's hilarious.

How old is Tom Ellis? I think he must be around 80. I remember him when he was going bald. He must have had hair transplants or a very good wig.

I have thought the same thing for the past few years, why is this old fella allowed to do the news in such a bad way. I guess he has a storied career - perhaps he should have ended it on a high note, not as a lethargic and bumbling weekend anchor.

I was just wondering how old Tom Ellis was. I don't have any thoughts about him. I just found out he's 76 according to a boston.com article. I would have guessed he was older.

Give me a break. I loved watching Tom Ellis. I only did a search to see if I could find him.

Tom has failed to talk about his failure as a father to 3 children that he refused to support after leaving Texas. Perhaps in a future interview someone will ask him about the 2 girls and 1 boy that he abandoned.

To call Tom Ellis a journalist is a bad joke. He is a terrible actor, who can barely read news. And it has nothing to do with hiss age. He has always been bad.

Truly non of your business. His children love him. You would of had to know his ex-wife. She took those kids out of Texas and out of his life. He could have tried harder but like I said... non of your business. What’s your business? Get a life

Oh yes, you would have to know his ex wife. Those kids grew up in a miserable, bitter, hateful environment. There was no pleasing that woman and their step dad was just as miserable. Perfect match but those poor kids.

i lived next door to his ex-wife and her husband. They lived to make the whole world miserable not just those kids. They would watch out the window all day spying on people and calling the police every time someone parked crooked. Of course the whole world had to know who her ex husband was. Tom Ellis a famous Boston anchorman. She just thought she was royalty. Lol

Seriously! Some people have more compassion for those that are less fortunate. The word Retard is not acceptable at anytime. What is your handicap? Just being ignorant?

His mother died when he was two and he was shipped away to two unloving people. Maybe he had to get through that somehow. What’s your story?
